Choosing the perfect location for your family photos can make all the difference. Albuquerque, New Mexico offers an incredible variety of backdrops—from the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande Bosque to historic adobe architecture and lush botanical gardens.

As an Albuquerque family photographer, I’m lucky to have so many beautiful locations right in my backyard. Whether you’re looking for a classic New Mexico feel, colorful fall foliage, dramatic mountain views, or a clean studio aesthetic, there’s a location for every family and every season.

Here are 10 of my favorite locations for family photos in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

01.

Elena Gallegos Open Space

If you’re looking for that iconic New Mexico landscape, Elena Gallegos Open Space is hard to beat. With sweeping views of the Sandia Mountains, open desert landscapes, and beautiful golden light, this location creates stunning family portraits year-round.

One of the things I love most about Elena Gallegos is how consistent the landscape can feel throughout the year. You’ll get that unmistakable New Mexico scenery in every season, with the possibility of snow-covered mountains and ground during the winter months.

For families wanting Albuquerque family photos with beautiful Sandia Mountain views, this is always a favorite.

02.

Old Town Albuquerque

Sometimes you simply can’t beat a classic.

Old Town Albuquerque is one of my favorite locations for families who want a little more architecture and character in their photos. The historic adobe buildings, traditional New Mexican details, colorful doors, and charming streets create a timeless backdrop.

This location works especially well if you love the look of authentic New Mexico architecture and want your family session to feel connected to Albuquerque's history and culture.

03.

Alameda Open Space

If you want variety, Alameda Open Space is a fantastic option for family photography.

The area connects with additional open space and offers a mix of open fields, trees, trails, and natural scenery. It gives us plenty of opportunities to move around and create a gallery that feels diverse without needing to travel between multiple locations.

And if you’re looking for fall photos in Albuquerque, this one should be high on your list. The beautiful colors throughout the Bosque create an incredible backdrop during the fall season.

04.

Lighthouse Studio

Sometimes the best family photos happen indoors.

Lighthouse Studio is a dream location, especially for families with young children. The studio provides a clean, timeless aesthetic while still offering plenty of personality and character.

One of my favorite things about studio sessions is the flexibility. You can incorporate props, switch between different backdrops, and create a variety of looks within one session.

If you’re planning winter family photos in Albuquerque, a studio session is also a great way to create beautiful portraits without worrying about cold temperatures or unpredictable weather.

05.

10K Trail

Located on the outskirts of Albuquerque near the Sandia Mountains, 10K Trail is absolutely worth the extra drive.

If you love dramatic mountain landscapes, open skies, and a more adventurous feel for your family photos, this location delivers.

The drive may be a little longer, but the scenery makes it worth it. Your session will feel like a true New Mexico adventure while still being close enough to Albuquerque for a convenient family photography session.

Tijeras Canyon

Want the mountain feel without going quite as far as 10K Trail?

Tijeras Canyon is a beautiful alternative.

You’ll still get gorgeous mountain scenery, wide-open plains, and incredible views in the distance. The combination of mountains and open landscapes gives your photos that quintessential New Mexico feel.

It’s a great choice for families who want something natural, scenic, and a little more removed from the city.

The Bosque

There’s something about the Rio Grande Bosque that just feels like home.

The Bosque offers a completely different landscape from the desert and mountains, with tall trees, lush greenery, trails, and beautiful seasonal changes.

Whether you’re dreaming of green summer foliage or warm fall colors, the Bosque is a beautiful choice for family photography in Albuquerque.

There are also multiple access points throughout the Albuquerque area, giving us flexibility when choosing the perfect spot for your session.

Los Poblanos Open Space

Los Poblanos Open Space is one of those locations that can make a family session feel completely dreamy.

The wide-open fields provide plenty of room for movement and candid moments, while the Sandia Mountains can often be seen in the distance.

I especially love this location when we want to incorporate lots of open sky into the images. It creates a light, airy feeling while still giving us that beautiful New Mexico landscape.

ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden

If you want color, greenery, and lots of variety, the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden is a beautiful option.

With so many different areas throughout the gardens, you can create a gallery with multiple looks and backgrounds in one location.

Depending on the season, you may find colorful blooms, lush greenery, textured pathways, and beautiful natural light. It’s a stunning backdrop for families who want something a little more colorful and garden-inspired.

10.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Last but certainly not least: the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

This one takes a little more planning, but it is absolutely worth the extra effort.

Balloon Fiesta isn’t just a photography location—it’s an experience. Having your family photographed surrounded by hundreds of colorful hot air balloons creates images that capture more than just what your family looked like that year. They capture a memory.

If you’re looking for something truly unique and unmistakably Albuquerque, Balloon Fiesta family photos are hard to beat.
